Note:- This project depends on The Rotary Foundation approving the VTT Grant Application,
The Grant Application can not be submitted until all 14 applicants have been selected.
Applicants are not to make any financial commitments until the grant is approved by The Rotary Foundation
VTT General Information
VTT Information
There will be 14 nursing/midwifery places available. This will be a five-week course held at the Central Queensland University Campus in Mackay Queensland Australia. Central Queensland University will concentrate the training on general nursing/midwifery and clinical practices, particularly maternal, newborn and child health, with a mix of theory and skills practice (simulation). Specific components will include:
- Antenatal care program: skilled antenatal care, Focussed antenatal care, parenting preparedness, recognising danger signs during pregnancy
- Obstetric emergencies, recognition of danger signs during labour and childbirth, preparation for referral and transfer
- Newborn resuscitation, danger signs in the newborn, skin-to-skin, breastfeeding
- Infant signs of danger, preventing stunting, optimising growth, childhood immunisations”
Timetable
- Fly from Timor-Leste and overnight in Darwin Friday 6/1/2023
- Arrive in Mackay on Saturday 7/1/2023
- Church Service on Sunday Morning – Australian induction on the Sunday Afternoon 8/1/2023.
- CQU Nurse Training Monday 9/1/2023 to Friday 10/2/2023 . Weekends will be your own time however transport to Church will be provided on Sunday morning
- At the end of the program a VTT debrief will be held on Saturday 11/2/2023
- Fly out of Mackay on overnight in Darwin Sunday 12/2/2023
- Fly from Darwin to Timor-Leste Monday 13/2/2023
Accommodation
Darwin:- hotel-style accommodation will be provided in Darwin
Mackay:- CQU Canefield College in a ten-room shared facility and a four room shared facility these have individual rooms with shared bathroom and kitchen facilities. Males and females will be separated into either the ten room shared facility or the four room shared facility. Places for either male on female nurses/midwives may be limited by the availability of either male or female accommodation. See accommodation link below

Food
Food for meals will be provided at the shared facility but will have to be prepared by the VTT members.
An allowance of $100 a week, up to $500 for the duration of the project, will be provided to each VTT member to cover living expenses.
Application Forms
Preference is given to Rotarian’s or Rotaract’s. The team leader must have a general level of Rotary knowledge, international experience, leadership skills, and some expertise as a nurse/midwife. Non-Rotarians may serve as team leaders provided the sponsors establish the need for this in the grant application.
Quallifications and Responsibilities
- Assume complete charge of the team and act as liaison between the team and the host clubs
- Remain with the team for the duration of the study tour, except in the case of separate team member activities. Under no circumstances should the team leader plan to leave the tour before its conclusion.
- Be alert, energetic, and physically and mentally able to keep pace with a rigorous host program
- Have proficiency (preferably fluency) in English
- Not be accompanied by a spouse, companion, fiancé(e), or other relatives or dependents on the VTT under any circumstances
- Assist team members in preparing speeches for Rotary club meetings and other functions (e.g., presentation for the host district’s conference)
- Play an active role in the team members’ pre-departure orientation to ensure they are well-informed, motivated, and cohesive as a team
- Be the primary contact between the team and the VTT committee, and ensure that the team has completed all necessary pre-departure documents and fulfilled all pre-departure obligations/responsibilities

Team Member Applications
Conditions for Team Membership
Team member candidates’ must
- Be working in Timor-Leste as a qualified nurse/midwife
- Have two years’ experience, postgraduate, in nursing and/or midwifery working in Timor-Leste.
- Be able to speak, read and write English.
- Be able to get an Australian Visa
- Be able to be released from your employer for the duration of the program
Failure to comply with team member eligibility criteria can lead to misunderstandings and last-minute changes in the VTT team’s composition.
To fulfill the rigorous and extensive demands of international travel and active participation in multi-week activities, candidates must also be
- In good health
- Neat in appearance and able to express themselves clearly and logically
- Of a sound, general knowledge background and cultural awareness
- Interested in and clearly enthusiastic about their chosen vocations, and possess outstanding vocational skills
- Open-minded, tolerant, and flexible
- Proficient (preferably fluent) in English
- Able to travel for the five weeks of the VTT with their employer’s consent
- Able to receive an Australian Visa
- Able to depart from the same location and on the same date as the rest of the team 6 of January 2023
Note: Qualified nurse/midwife Rotaractors are encouraged to apply for team membership if they meet all eligibility criteria. Relatives of a deceased Rotarian may also be eligible for membership, if they meet the above qualifications.
