Bikes to Wheelchairs Project

PROJECT HISTORY.
Building on the good work done by the Rotary Club of Surfers Sunrise, we are building basic robust wheelchairs, some parts of which are sourced from discarded bikes.  Surfers Sunrise have refined a design and construction model to efficiently make these wheel-chairs.
They have manufactured over 8000 wheelchairs during the last 20 years, and have delivered them to 31 countries where they have provided basic mobility for people with a range of disabilities. There is an ongoing need for more of these wheel-chairs.

Gladstone Sunrise are doing the same work locally, and have adopted a similar model to that used by Surfers Sunrise with involvement from other community groups and business’. We are also supported by other Rotary Clubs in our district

Sourcing Bikes
Our first priority was to secure an ongoing source of bikes. We are pleased to be able to report that the Gladstone Regional Council has agreed to collect all bikes that were previously dumped and now supply to us for this project.
Workshop
We have had the use of a donated workshop for 18 months until end of year 2017 but have been fortunate to secure the use of another premises from the start of 2018. We have recently moved into the former Reef City Ford building, but this is also a short to medium term arrangement.  A long term solution to this is critical to the project going forward.

Value of a wheelchair
Simple wheelchairs like this will completely change the life of a disabled person and also their family, as it allows both the disabled person and their carer to be more independent and productive. Basic wheelchairs like this can be produced for about $100.00.

Cost to make
It is a sobering to think that the life of a whole family can be drastically changed for ever by the gift of a $100.00 wheelchair.
It is also important to understand that all donated money goes directly to building wheelchairs, with 0% going to admin or labour.
All Rotarians and Friends of Rotary are unpaid volunteers.

Community Involvement
Surfers Sunrise have developed long standing relationships with several other Community groups. These people add value to the package when the wheelchair is shipped. Each wheelchair is delivered with at least a basic paint job but some have been customised with other personalised artwork.
In Gladstone in addition to the assistance that have had from community minded individuals, and other Rotary Clubs, we have formed a good relationship with
Toolooa State High,
Gladstone State High, and
Chanel College
Arts students and other school groups have added colour and appeal to many of the wheel-chairs by giving them individual painted designs. Each school has indicated the wish for an ongoing relationship with the project.

d9560 PASSPORT ROTARY

PURPOSE OF PASSPORT CLUB

Rotary Passport Club members are local people who want to make a difference in their community in a way that fits within their time, talent and finances, as well as with their family, work and life commitments.

Our newly formed Rotary Passport Club members are full Rotary members, with the same privileges and rights as Rotarians in traditional clubs. Membership in our club provides you with a passport to visit and work with any other Rotary Club in the world and to take part in activities, programs and projects that interest and engage you.

  • Attract new and returning members to Rotary who have difficulty attending weekly meetings.
  • Invite people who have a TRUE PASSION for making a difference in their community through service.
  • Reduce the time a Rotaractor transitions to Rotary membership.
  • Retain members where expense is a drawback to joining or continuing Rotary.
  • Support existing Clubs in their “Service Above Self” community projects with additional resources.

HOW IT OPERATES

To do this, our newly formed Rotary Passport Club only holds a few “in-person” meetings each year. Instead of weekly meetings, members are encouraged to engage in humanitarian service – however that works best for them. The founding principle of our Rotary Passport Club is to make Rotary fit your life.

  • Passport Club has only four business meetings / year, once per quarter.
  • During the other 8 months, they will have a meeting with a Club or assist / attend other club fundraisers / events.
  • Have a social (i.e. Happy Hour) / Zoom meeting each month at various locations.
  • Members can also attend any other meeting of any Club in the District that may be convenient for their schedule.
  • Members are REQUIRED to commit to 30 hours of service each year through projects, fundraisers and/or supporting other non-profit organizations.
  • All partner Clubs in the District are requested to email their upcoming projects/fundraisers to the Passport Club President and Secretary. These events will be posted on the Passport Club calendar so all members can pick which projects/events fit their schedules.

MEMBER EXPECTATIONS

  • If the 30-hour service commitment is not feasible due to other personal time commitments, the Passport Club member would consider donating to The Rotary Foundation (TRF) each year.
  • Passport Club members are responsible for paying Rotary International and District 9570 dues
